Snoods are stylish, warm and comfortable to wear. As such they are very well suited to the Scottish climate! I make these comfy snoods from chunky handspun wool, which I weave into a pattern on my knitting machine using a thinner 1-ply yarn. This combination of techniques is efficient with the labour intensive handspun wool, and results in a soft textured fabric.
Unique snoods
Each snood is unique, with different colours of wool and different weaving patterns.
I have personally selected the natural coloured wool at the Shetland Woolbroker. Oliver Henry helped me pick fleeces from gimmers − sheep that are just over a year old and sheared for the first time. The fibers in the wool have an exceptionally fine crimp: they are very long, fine and very curly soft. The dyed wool comes from Jamieson of Shetland, where I selected the coloured roving at the spinning mill. By using different patterns to weave the snoods I can make endless combinations.
Time and cost
There’s about 125g of wool in each snood, costing only a few pounds. They are however fairly time-consuming to make, involving approximately 5 hours of spinning, 1 hour of weaving and finishing.
Care instructions
